Lesley Duxbury's Look Both Ways reimagines landscape through the lens of a Black Mirror, or Claude glass—an 18th-century optical device once used by artists and travelers.

Each photograph places the black mirror within a natural setting, transforming it into a reflective portal that alters perception. Resting on the forest floor among dried gum leaves, twigs, and bark, or balancing on a rock in a flowing river, the mirror captures and reframes its surroundings into a distilled, shifting reflection.

Seen from the vantage point of an observer gazing downward, the images invite a more intimate engagement with landscape—one shaped by perspective, movement, and time. Look Both Ways extends Duxbury's ongoing exploration of how we see, document, and reinterpret the natural world through reflective observation.

Lesley Duxbury is a Gippsland-based artist specialising in photography and printmaking, focusing on the atmospherics of landscapes and perceptions of place. She has undertaken extended walks in remote regions like Arctic Baffin Island and Isla Navarino in Tierra del Fuego, using photography to document the landscape and its atmosphere.
